The Impact of a Concussion on Neuro-Visual Processing: Differentiating Symptoms and Characteristics for Treatment Protocol

The Department of Defense and Veteran Affairs (VA) report that over 70% of TBI patients at military medical facilities have reported
visual complaints such as headaches, diplopia, vertigo, eye strain, visual fatigue, etc.

Following a concussion, the visual spatial process is often compromised causing Post Trauma Vision Syndrome (PTVS) and Visual Midline Shift Syndrome (VMSS). The midbrain superior colliculus to organizes visual spatial information with proprioception and vestibular systems. affecting extra-ocular movements, posture, balance, accommodative function coordinating movement and enhancing efficiency between vision and sensorimotor performance.

This presentation is to advance the understanding about vision with a review of pertinent research and neurology as well as to demonstrate that organization of vision emanates from an action system. The presentation will enable professionals to recognize the symptoms of a spatial visual processing compromise and to apply advanced rehabilitative approaches to organize the bi-modal visual process combined with interventions.
