People with neuro-traumatic injuries have primarily been unrecognized as a population for public health attention, but recent efforts have started to make the poor health of this population visible. In this session, we will present studies on racial/ethnic and geographic disparities in outcomes among veterans with TBI, including survival, health services utilization, combat exposure, and mechanism of injury. We will also discuss how this has led to novel language translation and telehealth interventions in the US territories. In addition, we will demonstrate the experiences, barriers, and needs of minority stroke survivors in accessing appropriate post-acute-care rehabilitation services. Lastly, we will present results from investigations on racial disparity in food access among individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) using the SCI model system data and discuss the relationship between having low food access and the risk of being overweight/obese among individuals with SCI.
