Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic, complex, highly disabling neurodegenerative disorders characterized by motor symptoms associated with non-motor impairments in diverse areas such as cognition, fatigue and sleep. Despite the pharmacological and surgical treatment, many symptoms do not respond to therapy. A growing body of evidence suggests art-based medicine hold potential power to rehabilitate some of these lost functions. This symposium will review extant evidence regarding the physiologic effect of music-based practices (e.g., music therapy, dance/movement therapy, dance training [1,2]) on symptoms and sequela associated with PD.

Learning Objectives:

Summarize applications of art (i.e., music, dance, visual art) for rehabilitative treatment of Parkinson’s Disease.
Identify neurobiological mechanisms hypothesized/evidenced as mechanisms of action for art as rehabilitative treatment.
Discuss evidence supporting use of art-based paradigms for health among individuals with Parkinson’s Disease
