Current estimates indicate that millions of people in the United States live with a multisystem disorder. These complex health conditions are characterized by impaired functioning of the nervous, immune, gastrointestinal, and cardiovascular systems. This includes, but is not limited to, individuals with autonomic nervous system disorders (dysautonomia) from immunological disorders, primary or secondary mitochondrial disorders, and connective tissue disorders. The present authors recognize these multisystem conditions as neuroimmune disorders due to key, shared autonomic and immunologic mechanisms. Fortunately, these conditions are receptive to transdisciplinary rehabilitative therapies which enhance functioning and increase participation in valued life activities. This symposium will describe: (1) the public health need of neuroimmune conditions and introduce a novel, rehabilitation-focused health care approach to address this largely unaddressed need; and (2) define the relevance of neuroimmune conditions for rehabilitation disciplines and describe the clinical roles pertinent to the health creation for individuals with these conditions.

Describe the range of roles for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech language pathology in the health creation of individuals with neuroimmune conditions.
