Pressure ulcers are a common problem on the inpatient rehabilitation unit. In this country, approximately 1-3 million people develop pressure ulcers each year, and approximately 60,000 people die from complications due to these ulcers. The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory panel estimates that up to 6% of individuals in rehabilitative care have pressure ulcers. Rehabilitation clinicians including physiatry, nursing, and physical therapists are integral members of the wound management interdisciplinary team. The goals of this team are to optimize the medical condition and nutritional status of the patient and to develop a customized approach to managing each individual's wound in order to achieve the best outcome.
