Studies presented in this symposium investigated social determinants of health in people with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The first study describes health literacy and its relationship to injury characteristics and outcomes in a sample of 205 people with TBI. The second study describes development and validation of a measure of multidimensional perceptions of health in a diverse general sample (n=357) and in a subsample of people with ABI (n=22 TBI, n=8 Stroke). The third study summarizes the extant literature on the relationship between home neighborhood tree canopy coverage and mental health in general and pilot data on this association among 626 persons with chronic TBI living in Texas. Together, these studies emphasize the importance of considering social determinants of health when investigating and facilitating outcomes following TBI.
