Obesity after acquired brain injury (ABI) including traumatic brain injury (TBI) and cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is a public health issue, further exacerbates the effects of the injury, and increases an individual’s risk of chronic conditions such as hypertension, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and recurrent stroke. The objectives of this presentation include (a) identifying causes of weight gain and barriers to weight loss in people after TBI and CVA, (b) describing current evidence-based approaches to weight loss and healthy lifestyle for people with ABI, (c) reporting results of our current work modifying and delivering the Diabetes Prevention Program Group Lifestyle Balance (DPP-GLB), an evidence-based and CDC-approved weight loss intervention, to adults with TBI and CVA, and (d) identifying future research and knowledge translation opportunities.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will understand the challenge of obesity after ABI.
Upon completion, participants will be able to describe the unique causes of weight gain and barriers to weight loss/behavior change for individuals after ABI.
Upon completion, participants will understand current evidence-based programs for weight-loss available to people after ABI.
Upon completion, participants will be able to describe the modifications and results of two evidence-based and CDC-approved weight-loss interventions for people with TBI and CVA living in the community.
