This course offers a revolutionary shift in non-pharmacologic interventions for patients with neurologic conditions. Presenters will highlight a pain mechanisms classification system to guide education and active care for patients when pain and spasticity limit their function and ability to perform low and high-intensity exercise. Recognizing dominating pain mechanisms within the peripheral and central nervous system allows for precise patient education and exercise prescription. Have you ever considered treating spasticity as a symptom of pain? Have you ever had a patient who had spasticity and pain simultaneously? This workshop presents a “paradigm shift” in the non-pharmacy interventions for patients with neurological disorders complaints of pain and spasticity.

Learning Objectives:

Differentiate subjective and objective clinical characteristics for hypertonia related to the peripheral nervous system.
Apply the pain mechanism classification system and clinical reasoning to neurologic patient case studies to identify spinal directional preference and neurodynamic tension.
Use evidence-based procedures that address pain and spasticity, while promoting high intensity exercise tolerance and functional exercise progression for patients with neurologic conditions.
Classify pain and hypertonia dominant mechanisms to prescribe individualized patient education and active care intervention.
Demonstrate application of common neurodynamic exercise and cervical and lumbar spine directional preference active and passive exercise for the neurological patient.
