(Day 1) This course introduces advanced concepts of family systems and applies them within the rehabilitation setting. More frequently than not, healthcare professionals working with families after a brain injury are not sure how to intervene most effectively to improve problem solving competencies, communication styles, roles, affective responsiveness, affective involvement among couples, and behavioral control. Following a general overview of the field of brain injury, the instructors will be discussing topics on psychoeducation, psychodynamic principles, and cognitive behavioral therapy models in the treatment of individuals with TBI, caregivers and their family units. Special mention will be made to pediatric populations. Case discussions will finalize our instruction by discussing issues of cultural competency and humility when engaging families and their loved ones to within the rehabilitation setting.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participant will be able to identify and describe examples of difficulties couples and/or families encounter when their loved one sustains a TBI.
Upon completion, participants will be able to identify and discuss general psychodynamic principles when working with couples or family units post TBI.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to define and describe a problem solving oriented model of intervention, when working with couples or family units post TBI.
Upon completion, participants will be able to identify and describe issues post TBI among families with pediatric population.
Upon completion, participants will be able to identify and discuss cultural issues pertaining to working with families of different background; participants will be versed in techniques to enhance therapeutic alliance and increase engagement.
