Cross-cultural Adaptation for Assessment Lifestyle of Japanese Older Adults: Using Delphi Method

Research Objectives: To cross-cultural adaptation of the Yonsei Lifestyle Profile (YLP) for the assessment lifestyle of Japanese older adults and examine content validation of the Yonsei Lifestyle Profile-Japanese (YLP-J).

Design: Delphi study.

Setting: Community setting.

Participants: The Delphi expert was 11 people, and the inclusion criteria met follow 1) Person who has published research about older adults’ life, 2) Person who has worked in a department of occupational therapy in a Japanese university as a professor, or 3) Person who has worked in a hospital or nursing home for at least 5 years in occupational therapy, or 4) Person who is Japanese or has extensively studied in Japan.

Interventions: Not applicable.

Main Outcome Measures: The YLP was developed by the Korean lifestyle research team. In this study, we examined the content validity ratio (CVR), stability, convergence, and consensus of the relevance of each item using question: Is the item suitable to Japanese older adults’ lifestyle from a Japanese cultural point of view? The CVR value was .59 when the number of experts is 11.

Results: First, we translated YLP to YLP-J using a forward-backward translation method. Next, as a result of Delphi survey round 1, the CVR mean value about the relevance of the item was .58, 25 items did not meet the CVR criteria value among 61 items. All of the authors decided to modify and provided detailed descriptions based on Delphi expert comments. After the modified process, we started round 2 of the Delphi survey. The results of the 2nd Delphi survey were CVR mean of .93, stability means of .16, convergence mean, of .39, and consensus means of .80.

Conclusions: We translated YLP to YLP-J and examined the content validation of YLP-J. All items of YLP-J met the CVR value, which means appropriate assessment items to assess the lifestyle of Japanese older adults. This study suggests a lifestyle assessment tool, that will provide a baseline for the intervention of redesign of lifestyle in Japanese older adults.
