Dr. Larry Edwards completed his medical school education in his hometown at the University of Miami. He completed his medicine residency at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska before moving to the University of Michigan for research fellowships under the direction of Drs. Irving A. Fox and William N. Kelley. He then joined the faculty at the University of Michigan and was made Director of Education and Training by Dr. Giles Bole. He left Ann Arbor in 1983 to join Dr. Richard Panush at the University of Florida where he has been ever since. He has been Chief of the Section of Rheumatology at the Veterans’ Affairs Hospital since 1988, Rheumatology Program Director from 1988 to 2002, Interim Division Chief and then Clinical Division Chief of Rheumatology from 1997-2002. Most recently he has been Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Program Director of the Medicine Residency Training Program since 2003.
Dr. Edwards’ clinical and research interests have centered on purine metabolism and crystalline arthropathies. His early investigations examined the biochemistry and clinical manifestations of inborn errors of purine catabolism and the mechanism of hyperuricemia in gouty subjects.
