Dr. Oates is the Director of the Division of Rheumatology and Immunology and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine. His general training is in immunology and autoimmunity, with specific expertise in lupus, lupus nephritis, endothelial dysfunction, biomarkers and predictors of lupus nephritis outcomes and atherosclerosis in lupus, and the role of reactive intermediates in lupus nephritis and atherosclerosis. His primary clinical interest is in systemic lupus erythematosus. He has maintained a translational research laboratory and has developed a clinical research program as an integral member of the Medical University of South Carolina Lupus Erythematosus (MUSCLE) clinical research group. He has conducted multiple investigator initiated clinical studies and commercial clinical trials. As the Director of the P30 Clinical and Community Core of the, he led the CCCR informatics development to report patient and population-level lupus and scleroderma phenotypes in the medical record for interface with a longitudinal registry, order research specimens through electronic order entry, and, store, retrieve and quality check clinical data and biospecimens for use by internal and external investigators. He is currently the Chair of the Division Directors Committee.
