Prof. Dr. Rieke Alten is head of the Department of Internal Medicine, Rheumatology, Clinical Immunology, Osteology at Schlosspark-Klinik, University Medicine Berlin, where she also serves as the director of the Rheumatology Research Center.She received her medical degrees from the Free University Berlin. After graduating she pursued immunology research at Institute of Immunology, University of Zürich (Switzerland).
Rieke Alten had her training in internal medicine of Free University Berlin, which was followed by a training in Rheumatology in Zürich. In 1984 she received board certification in internal medicine, 1985 in rheumatology, 1998 in physical therapy und rehabilitation medicine, 2001 in sports medicine. Since 1990 she was appointed head of the Department of Internal Medicine Rheumatology at Schlosspark-Klinik, University Medicine Berlin. Her research interests focus on the development and systematic evaluation of biological and immunolomodulatory treatments for the rheumatic diseases. She has been lead and principle investigator in clinical trials of novel therapies in rheumatic diseases and has contributed to several investigator-initiated trials. She published more than 200 original papers, book chapters and reviews. Prof. Dr. Rieke Alten is a member of the OMERACT Steering Committee of the Flare in Rheumatoid Arthritis Group. She served as board member of German Medical Association, as member of the Institute for Approval of drugs for the German Ministry of Health.
