Dr. Hiroshi Kajiyama is a physician researcher, a board-certified physician, a board-certified rheumatologist and a board-certified nephrologist in Japan. He graduated from Gunma University School of Medicine in 1993, and obtained Ph.D. in Doctor Course, Faculty of Medicine, Gunma University School of Medicine in 1999, mentored by Dr. Yoshihisa Nojima. After he worked as an instructor for three years and a half in the institute of rheumatology, Tokyo Women's Medical University, mentored by Dr. Chihiro Terai, he had an opportunity to work as a visiting fellow in kidney disease section, NIDDK, NIH in the U.S.A. for five years, mentored by Dr. Jeffrey B. Kopp. He engaged in animal studies and basic cell culture studies to clarify the mechanisms of sulodexide (glycosaminolycan) renoprotective effects, and pathogenesis of Vpr in HIV-associated nephropathy model. He also participated in establishing mouse and human podocyte cell lines there. He started his career in September 2008, in Department of Rheumatology and Applied Immunology, Saitama Medical University, and his research interests include podocyte biology, urinary podocyte markers, mechanisms of HCQ beneficial effects and toxicity, JAK inhibitors, Vpr effects on podocytes, treatment for patients with rheumatoid arthritis and chronic kidney disease, and treatment of patients with lupus nephritis.
