Dr Bertolaccini was born in Rosario, Argentina where she graduated from Medical School in 1993. In 1996, she moved to London and joined the Lupus Research Unit at St Thomas' Hospital. Since obtaining her PhD at King’s College London she pursued a career in basic science characterizing autoantibodies with the ultimate goal of doing translational research to improve the diagnostic and therapeutic options for patients with autoimmune diseases. During the years, she developed a substantive programme of clinical research focused on immunological markers and predictors of thrombosis, which has translated to the demonstration of the importance of antiprothrombin antibodies as predictors of thrombosis in patients with APS. Currently, she is a Research Associate at the Academic Department of Vascular Surgery, King’s College London British Heart Foundation Centre of Excellence, School of Cardiovascular Medicine & Sciences, where she continues to develop her programme of research.
