Professor Ronald F. van Vollenhoven is Chair of Rheumatology and Director of the Amsterdam Rheumatology Center (ARC) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
He received his MD and PhD degrees from the University of Leiden in The Netherlands and was trained in rheumatology at Stanford University. Following faculty appointments at Stanford University and the Karolinska University Hospital he was appointed as Professor and Chief of Clinical Therapy Research at the Karolinska Institute. In January 2016 he became Professor of Rheumatology at the University of Amsterdam and the VU University as the first Chair of Rheumatology at the new Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology of Amsterdam UMC and Director of the ARC.
Dr. Van Vollenhoven’s research interests focus around the development and systematic evaluation of biological and immunomodulatory treatments for the rheumatic diseases. He has published over 400 original papers (H-index: 75), book chapters and reviews, he is an honorary member of several rheumatological societies, and in 2019 he was awarded the Dutch Rheumatology Society’s highest award, the Jan van Breemen medal. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Lupus Science & Medicine, member of the EULAR Executive, NORD-STAR principal investigator and the initiator of the DORIS initiative. Prof. Van Vollenhoven is married and has two children aged 25 and 21. Outside his professional life he is an avid classical pianist.
