Following the completion of my Internal Medicine Residency training in 1986 (Ohio State University Hospital), I began my post-doctoral laboratory research training experience at the NIAID/NIH Laboratory of Immunology under the leadership of Dr. William Paul and under the direct supervision of Dr. Ronald H. Schwartz. It was there that I developed my basic research expertise and focus on immunological self-tolerance and systemic autoimmunity. I left the NIH in 1990 and joined the Rheumatic Diseases Division of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center under Dr. Peter Lipsky where I undertook my Rheumatology fellowship training and subsequently became a Junior Faculty member. I was soon recruited to the University of Minnesota to take a position as a physician-scientist in the Department of Medicine/Rheumatology Section. In year 2000, I was appointed the Director of a reconfigured Rheumatic and Autoimmune Diseases Division. I am currently a Professor of Medicine and also a Core Faculty member within the Center for Immunology. My research program examines the regulation of CD4 T cell and B cell antigen responsiveness and immune self-tolerance in individuals prone to the development of autoimmune arthritis. I am also an active clinician in the practice of Rheumatology, with a focus on inflammatory arthritis.
