I am a rheumatologist with a PhD in epidemiology, and a James McGill professor of Medicine. As a rheumatologist who specializes in autoimmune inflammatory diseases like SLE and RA, I am an active member in many research networks (SLE International Collaborating Clinics, Canadian Network for Improved Outcomes in SLE, and others), leading international initiatives on systemic autoimmune rheumatic disease risk and outcomes. I am co-founder of several other large collaborative networks, including the Canadian Rheumatology Administrative Data Network, which focuses on optimal use of administrative data for research and surveillance. My expertise in the study of rheumatic disease prevalence, patterns, and co-morbidity, using provincial administrative data from across Canada led to my participation in the Public Health Agency of Canada Arthritis Validation Working Group. Over more than a decade, we created detailed algorithms for rheumatic disease surveillance in Canada and helped the Canadian Institute for Health Information refine case definitions for their own research and surveillance activities. I am currently nominated PI for the Canadian Network for Advanced Interdisciplinary Methods team, which is aimed at developing novel methods to evaluate drug safety and effectiveness.
