Dr. Ombrello is a combined adult and pediatric rheumatologist and an Investigator at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), where he leads the Translational Genetics and Genomics Unit. His research program uses genomics approaches as an entry point to investigate the pathophysiology of systemic arthritis (systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis and adult-onset Still’s disease) and other autoinflammatory diseases. To this end, Dr. Ombrello leads an NIH clinical research study of systemic arthritis in people of all ages. He also leads the International Childhood Arthritis Genetics (INCHARGE) Consortium, which facilitates population-based genomic studies of systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Dr. Ombrello is an active volunteer for many organizations and he has shown a strong commitment to providing early career investigators with the information and skills necessary to succeed in research. He has received a variety of research awards, including Merit Awards from NIAID and NIAMS, the Distinguished Fellow Award from the American College of Rheumatology, and the NIH Director’s Award.
