Dr George AW Bruyn is Senior Consultant Rheumatologist and Director of Rheumatology Clinics in Lelystad, the Netherlands. He graduated as an MD from Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Brussels, Belgium. He received his training in Internal Medicine at the Leiden University Hospital, after which he served as fellow in the Department of Rheumatology at Utrecht University Hospital. In 1989, he became a Dutch board-certified rheumatologist. In 1990, he completed his PhD thesis on “Immunological and clinical aspects of pneumococcal infections”. From 1989 to 2009, he was a Consultant Rheumatologist at the Medisch Centrum Leeuwarden, Leeuwarden. From 2009 to 2019, he served as senior rheumatologist and chairman of the department of rheumatology at the MC Groep hospitals Lelystad. In 1991, Dr Bruyn co-founded the Dutch Working Group on Ultrasonography. He is the founder of the Musculoskeletal Ultrasonography Study Group of the American College of Rheumatology (1999). From 1999 until 2010, together with Dr Wolfgang Schmidt, he was a teaching professor of the basic and advanced workshops in ultrasonography at the ACR/ARHP annual meetings. Dr Bruyn is a EULAR faculty member of the Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Ultrasound courses as well as the Teach the Teacher course. Between 2014-2020, he served as co-chair of the OMERACT Ultrasound Working Group. He is a rheumatology consultant in labour issues for the Dutch High Court of Appeal.
