Susanne Sattler is group leader at the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) at Imperial College London, UK, and at the Department of Cardiology, at the Medical University in Graz. Austria. She and her cardio-immunology team investigate the crosstalk between the adaptive immune system and the heart.
Susanne Sattler graduated in 2009 at the University of Vienna, Austria, after an interdisciplinary project at the crossroads between vascular biology and immunology. She subsequently moved to the Centre of Complement and Inflammation Research (CCIR) at Imperial College London, UK. There she developed a keen interest in the regulatory control of immune responses as well as autoimmunity as an inevitable consequence of lacking or aberrant regulatory processes.
Having started out with a cardiovascular spin to immunology, in 2012, Susanne moved her focus to the question how autoimmunity affects tissue regeneration and joined the NHLI as a member of the Cardiac Regeneration group led by Prof. Nadia Rosenthal.
Since 2017, Susanne is an independent group leader and has since established the Cardio-Immunology group at the NHLI. They recently showed the crucial role of the cross-priming DC-cytotoxic T cell axes in cardiac immunopathology. In 2022, Susanne also joined the Department of Cardiology, at the Medical University in Graz. Austria, and now leads an international effort towards understanding and interrupting the vicious autoimmune-inflammatory loop leading to heart failure.
