Thea Vliet Vlieland is Professor at the Department of Orthopaedics, Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy of the Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands. Her area of research mainly concerns the development, evaluation and implementation of non-pharmacological interventions to improve the quality of care for patients with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs).
She has ample experience with the conduct of multicenter clinical trials on the (cost)-effectiveness of exercise therapy and other non-pharmacological interventions in RMDs. Her work also includes the development of clinical practice guidelines and other educational offerings for health professionals.
She is author of >375 international, peer-reviewed publications (https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6322-3859) and obtained multiple national and international research grants as main or co-applicant. She received a number of prizes and awards, including a EULAR (European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology) Honorary Membership in 2014 and the Distinguished Scholar Award of the Association of Rheumatology Professionals (ARP), a division of the American College of Rheumatology in 2008.
Within EULAR, Thea Vliet Vlieland served as chair of the Standing Committee of Health Professionals in Rheumatology from 2012-2014 and as Health Professionals in Rheumatology Vice President from 2020-2022.
