Dr. Thomas Malek is Professor and Chair in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Miami. He has a long-standing interest in IL-2R signaling and Treg development and function. His group first showed the critical reliance of Tregs for IL-2 and later established that low IL-2R signaling effectively supports Treg but not T effector cells, providing a scientific underpinning for low-dose IL-2 to boost Tregs in the context of autoimmunity. Current research from his lab investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which the IL-2R contributes to Treg and T effector cell function, with an emphasis on translating these findings in the context of autoimmunity and cancer.
