Onyinye I. Iweala, M.D., Ph.D. is an allergist and immunologist and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology Allergy, and Immunology at the University of North Carolina (UNC)-Chapel Hill. She is the Director of the Med/Allergy Mast Cell Disorders Program and the Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within her division. As part of the UNC Food Allergy Initiative, she studies mast cell inhibition in the treatment of food allergy, the immunologic mechanisms behind alpha-gal mammalian meat allergy, and the epigenetic regulation of allergic responses. She also studies how cutaneous and gastrointestinal parasitic infestation impact host immune responses. She is a recipient of a 2020 AAAAI Foundation Faculty Development Award. Dr. Iweala received her Ph.D. in Experimental Pathology from Harvard University and her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and a clinical and research fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at UNC-Chapel Hill.
