Hope Foundation
Bridgetown, Barbados
Shelley Weir established the Hope Foundation in 1991 to support patients with lupus and to educate the public and medical professionals about this disease with which she was diagnosed in 1990. In 1992, the Hope Foundation became the first patient-led organization to host an international medical conference and the tradition of education continues. Ms. Weir’s unwavering talent and energy for advocacy has made her a much sought-after advisor supporting regional groups with her template for development of similar organizations. She has the distinction of being the first non-medical person to chair the Patient Care Committee of the Board of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Almost from inception she expanded the mandate of the Hope Foundation to include patients with sickle cell disease, arthritis and the lesser-known chronic diseases. More recent projects developed by Ms. Weir include the Sherene Hillock-Hinds Caring for the Carer award celebrating caretakers, the Lupus Essential Kit program to engage patients in self-management and co-authored Lupus Essentials. Ms. Weir holds a Master of Science degree in Non-Governmental Organization management from the London School of Economics and Political Science. In 2009, she was recognised by the Government of Barbados for her service as a community activist with a national honour — Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
