Herpes zoster is a painful, cutaneous rash, resulting from reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus. In immunocompetent adults, the incidence of herpes zoster and related complications increases with age. The risk for herpes zoster and related complications is also increased in adults who are immunocompromised due to certain diseases or therapy. This lightning talk will briefly review the clinical presentation of herpes zoster, epidemiology, including incidence in some inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, and available burden of disease data in rheumatoid arthritis.
