Indigenous populations experience a high burden of rheumatic disease, often with more severe disease and poorer outcomes than in other populations. These health disparities have been described in many studies. However, there is a need to move beyond describing disparities to developing strategies and interventions to address inequities. Community engagement in research is critical to ensure that the research and any proposed interventions are culturally relevant and acceptable. This session will provide an overview of health disparities in indigenous populations in different countries, discuss community engagement in research, and provide recommendations for improving outcomes in rheumatic diseases in indigenous populations. Specific examples will be provided from different community contexts.
