The population is aging globally and the Rheumatology workforce must be prepared to take care of the inevitable complexities of our aging patients. As rheumatologists and health professionals, one approach to learning and adopting key aging constructs within our practice is to incorporate the established 5M’s of Aging-- principles fundamental to caring for older adults. Age-Friendly Health Systems are adopting the 5M’s to provide appropriate care for older adults: What Matters- aligning care with older adult’s specific goals (e.g. important daily life tasks); Mind-managing dementia and depression across care settings; Mobility- ensuring older adults can move safely to accomplish; Multi-complexity- managing multi-morbidity and challenging biopsychosocial situations; and Medications- ensuring that medications do not interfere with the other M’s.
During this symposium, a panel of experts will introduce and review the 5M’s in the context of rheumatic diseases. The panelists will emphasize a critical component of implementing the 5M’s: identifying, collaborating with, and nurturing an interdisciplinary team. This symposium is designed for all rheumatologists and health professionals who seek to improve the care for aging patients with rheumatic diseases.
