Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is one of the most common systemic rheumatic diseases of the elderly. Despite its high prevalence among rheumatic diseases, there are still several unmet needs and gaps in our knowledge of PMR, particularly with regards to treatment (e.g. optimal duration of steroids and use of steroid-sparing agents) and disease activity monitoring.
Recently, advances in our understanding of pathophysiology and studies of possible new therapeutics show some promise. Advances in imaging may inform the diagnosis and monitoring of PMR. This symposium will provide an update on PMR diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment. The session will highlight important items in the research agenda and the potential implementation in upcoming clinical trials in PMR.
