Management of osteoporosis is lifelong. Providers must determine whom and when to screen, how to choose initial therapy, including when to consider anabolic therapies, and once bone density improves, how to manage sequential osteoporosis medications. Management of the drug holiday will also be addressed.

Learning Objectives:

Examine the mechanism of action of osteoporosis therapies and basic science basis for combination and sequential therapy of osteoanabolic and antiresorptive therapies
Explore the clinical factors that guide the choice of initial osteoporosis therapy and a clinical approach for sequential use of osteoanabolic and antiresorptive therapies
Integrate clinical data to devise a lifelong treatment plan to build optimal bone, minimize risk via medication holiday, determine when and which therapy should be resumed and for how long
