This session will present a rheumatology clinical scenario to illustrate the role of scientific evidence in evidence-based practice (EBP). Attendees will be guided through the need for EBP (i.e., gap between what we know [science] and what we do [practice]). The speakers will define and outline the steps of EBP, including writing a clinical question using the PICO format, constructing strategies for searching databases and pre-appraised sources of evidence, critically appraising an intervention study using a checklist, applying the findings to the clinical scenario, evaluating the impact of the new intervention on patient outcomes, and self-evaluation of the clinician’s skills in finding and using the evidence. The clinical scenario will be based on a topic of interest to a variety of rheumatology disciplines.
