Before a new medication or vaccine is available to be prescribed, it goes through the clinical trials process. The clinical trials data provides information about how people respond to these medications and vaccines. Participants in these clinical trials have not been representative of the general population. The absence of diversity in clinical trials makes it difficult to discern which medications and devices are safe for specific populations. Our age, genetics, gender, and ethnic origin can influence how effective or safe a treatment is. Diversity in clinical trials is important to public health and can play a huge role eliminating health disparities and improving health equity.
