Costas H. Kefalas, MD, MMM, FACG, FASGE, AGAF, is in private practice at Akron Digestive Disease Consultants, Inc., in Akron, Ohio, since 2003. He is a Professor of Internal Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University and is on the active staff at Summa Health in Akron. He serves as a Physician Director of the Board of Directors of Summa Health. Dr. Kefalas completed a combined BS/MD program in 1997 at the University of Akron, where he was a University Scholar in the Honors Program, and at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In 2000, he completed an internal medicine residency at Summa Health. He completed a gastroenterology fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas in 2003. In 2015, Dr. Kefalas earned a Master of Medical Management (MMM) degree at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Kefalas is a Trustee on the ACG Board of Trustees and is the Past Chair of the ACG Board of Governors. He previously served as the ACG Governor for Northern Ohio (2008-2014); Chair, ACG FDA Related Matters Committee (2009-2013); Chair, ACG Membership Committee (2014-2016); Chair, ACG Public Policy Task Force (2016); and Vice-Chair, ACG Legislative and Public Policy Council. He currently serves as the President of GIQuIC. Dr. Kefalas co-founded the Ohio Gastroenterology Society (OGS) in 2009 and served as Founding President in 2011-2013. He has served as a Trustee of the Ohio Medical Quality Foundation from 2015-2017. Through his service with professional societies, Dr. Kefalas has had the opportunity to educate legislators and advocate on behalf of patients regarding gastrointestinal health and disease, both in Ohio and in Washington, D.C.
