Philip Schoenfeld, MD, MSEd, MSc (Epi), is Chief (Emeritus) of the Gastroenterology Section at the John D. Dingell VAMC in Detroit, MI. From 2000-2016, he was Professor of Medicine and Director of the GI Epidemiology Training Program at the University of Michigan. He completed MD degree and his Master's in Medical Education at the University of Pennsylvania and his Master's degree in Clinical Epidemiology at McMaster University. He served in the US Navy for 11 years, attaining the rank of Commander and completed his internal medicine residency at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA, and his gastroenterology fellowship at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD. Dr. Schoenfeld's research focuses on optimizing colon cancer screening with colonoscopy, the treatment of IBS, and the application of EBM to clinical practice guidelines. His research has been funded by multiple NIH and VHA research grants. Dr. Schoenfeld is the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of Evidence-Based GI: An ACG Publication and past Associate Editor of the journal GASTROENTEROLOGY, past Associate Editor (colon section) of The American Journal of Gastroenterology, and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and Gastroenterology & Hepatology. He is past chair of the Education Committee and the Clinical Practice Section of the AGA, past chair of the Public Relations Committee of the ACG, and past course director for the AGA Spring Postgraduate Course and the World Congress of Gastroenterology. He is the co-author of the ACG Monograph on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (2002,2009), Chronic Constipation (2005), Colon Cancer Screening (2008), and Quality Indicators in Colonoscopy (2015). He has published more than 250 original research articles, reviews, and book chapters, and has been the lead author on research publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and The American Journal of Gastroenterology.
