Ayse Aytaman, MD, FACG, earned her medical degree from the University of Vienna, where she studied with a full scholarship from the Austrian Ministry of Education. After her residency and fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn, she joined the faculty at VA New York Harbor HCS in Brooklyn. She created the first multi-disciplinary viral hepatitis team in 1999 with inclusion of clinical pharmacy and liver psychology in the VA system. In 2012, with a grant from VA Public Health (HHRC) Program, she established the first multi-facility and multi-disciplinary VISN wide hepatocellular carcinoma team and SCAN ECHO liver cancer tumor board in the nation, utilizing heavily telehealth/virtual telemedicine technology. The team has been organizing Yearly VA National Liver Cancer Summits since 2012. In 2018 she was instrumental in creating a VA national liver cancer team, and VA EES supported educational programs with spread of multidisciplinary liver cancer tumor boards across the nation. She is currently part of VA National Hepatology Program Liver Cancer field advisory group. She chairs the Veterans Integrated Network (VISN) 2 Liver team and was part of in systematic eradication of hepatitis C in VA system. She also has a telehepatology program all accross VISN 2 improving access to hepatology care across NY state. She is clinical professor of medicine at SUNY Health Science center in Brooklyn, involved in the hepatology curriculum for the medical school, residency, and fellowship program. She served as ACG Governor for Brooklyn and Region 1 for 6 years and now serves in education committee, membership committee and is a reviewer for the college's journal. Dr. Aytaman is also active in the AASLD hepatobiliary neoplasia special interest group. Dr. Aytaman has trained and mentored over 200 gastroenterology and hepatology fellows currently practicing across the U.S.
