Tonya Kaltenbach, MD, MS, FACG, is a Clinical Professor at Veterans Affairs San Francisco, University of California San Francisco, and director of advanced endoscopy at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Dr. Kaltenbach has a keen interest in gastrointestinal cancer prevention through the endoscopic detection, diagnosis, and removal of pre-and early cancer. She completed internal medicine and gastroenterology subspecialty training at Stanford University. During GI fellowship, she matriculated in a clinical research master's program in epidemiology and biostatistics and then pursued an additional year of training in advanced endoscopic mucosal imaging and therapy and endoscopic ultrasound. Over the years, she has also collaborated and directly trained with Japanese experts. Dr. Kaltenbach is an active researcher and educator in the field of advanced endoscopic imaging and therapy and colonoscopy competency, training, and quality. She has served on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Colorectal Cancer Screening Panel and on the US Multi-Society Task Force on Colorectal Cancer, in which she led the development of clinical recommendations for the endoscopic removal of colorectal lesions. Currently, she is leading a national initiative to implement a colonoscopy quality improvement program across Veterans Affairs Healthcare Centers using quality dashboards and active shared learning to improve colonoscopy quality through provider assessment and education. Dr. Kaltenbach has published over 150 works, many of which are seminal observational studies, randomized trials, guidelines, and endoscopy teaching videos. In recognition of her enduring dedication to endoscopy education, she was awarded the ASGE Distinguished Educator Award in 2014 and Master Endoscopist Award in 2022. She continues to serve as faculty at various didactic and hands-on courses worldwide.
