Mark Riddle, MD, DrPH, FISTM, serves in two concurrent roles as the Associate Chief of Staff for Research & Medicine Service Staff Physician at the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System in Reno, NV, and as Professor of Internal Medicine & Associate Dean of Clinical Research, University of Nevada Reno, School of Medicine, Reno, NV. Dr. Riddle brings more than two decades of combined research and development, public health, academic and clinical medicine expertise while serving as a Medical Corps Officer in the US Navy. Specific areas of expertise include the vaccine development where he spent nearly two decades developing vaccines to defeat common deployment related infections, as well as exploring the frontiers of science in the epidemiology and mechanisms of chronic gastrointestinal disorders. He has an active research portfolio including being site principal investigator on a number of industry sponsored clinical trials, as well as advancing biomarker discovery in irritable bowel syndrome, reactive active arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and long COVID. A few of Dr. Riddle’s most significant research accomplishments include: Defining the epidemiology of post-infectious gastrointestinal consequences through use of large Medical Encounter databases; Advancing the evidence for effectiveness and safety of loperamide-adjuncted single dose antibiotic therapy for acute bacterial diarrhea; Describing the importance of microbial antibodies in the association with development of post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome; Discovery of serum biomarkers which predicts Crohn’s disease phenotype well before clinical diagnosis; and Development and testing of novel vaccines against the primary causes of travelers’ diarrhea. Beyond clinical and translational research initiatives and leadership efforts, he has an active clinical practice at the VA in travel medicine and treatment of disorders of gut-brain interaction in a subspecialty IBS clinic.
