Preparing for Pediatric Physical Therapy Board Specialization

There is a need for physical therapists with advanced clinical knowledge, experience, and skills in the specialty area of pediatric physical therapy. The ABPTS certification process recognizes physical therapists (PTs) who have demonstrated these advanced competencies and assists consumers and the healthcare community to identify PTs who are specialists. Pediatric PTs are taking initiative for professional development despite the challenges of COVID times. This session is designed for those who have or will meet the minimum hours of direct patient care eligibility to sit for the exam and are contemplating taking the PCS board examination. This session led by leaders from the APTA Pediatrics PCS Prep Committee will provide insight (wisdom) and practical strategies for PCS board preparation to develop individualized timelines for preparation through multiple pathways. Topics of discussion will include self-assessment to ensure you have the “right skills”, how to adapt a scholarly approach to your clinical practice to enhance clinical reasoning skills, getting familiar with the exam structure, how to strengthen social connections for learning through virtual networking, opportunities to “test out” PCS Exam strategies for questions written at the level of synthesis and analysis levels of cognitive skills, and how to access resources for distance and face to face learning opportunities. This interactive session will offer opportunities for questions and answers and time for small group discussion to assist in the formulation of an individual action plan for the advancement of professional development leading to pediatric physical therapy specialization.
