Chronic pain is defined as pain lasting longer than a duration of 3 months and is considered a health condition. The American Academy of Pediatrics in 2016 indicated that 11-38% of children experience chronic pain. This leads to over 1.7 million children affected by chronic pain per year, costing up to 19.5 billion dollars per year. This session will walk the clinician through the development of a multidisciplinary outpatient pediatric pain program. Evidence-based treatment strategies for those with nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic pain will be presented with a focus on transition to community engagement and regular wellness practices. Systemic and implicit bias contributing to under-treatment of pain in Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) and those with altered communication, cognitive, or social skills on the individual and programmatic levels will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

Define the different mechanisms which may contribute to chronic pain, and health conditions commonly associated with pain in children.
Plan evidence-based interventions to address chronic nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic pain based on individual patient needs.
Outline development of an outpatient pediatric pain program in collaboration with multidisciplinary team members, mitigating the impact of systemic as well as implicit bias on the individual and programmatic levels.
