This session will explore elements of IDEA, state and local regulations as well as professional codes of ethics that can impact IEP decision making . Participants will learn to find and apply knowledge from IDEA, state/local regulations, state practice acts and professional codes of ethics ito support their interactions with administrators, teams and families to problem solve and mitigate difficult situations and discussions effectively. Each of these areas will be explored in greater depth in order for participants to understand how the content may be used in their work with students, teams ans administrators. A study done by the then Section on Pediatrics done in 2013 on conflicts in school based and early intervention will be shared. Caseload and Workload will be discussed and its impact on IEP decision making, ethics and work satisfaction. A model of ethical decision making will be shared and discussed as well as an exploration of personal traps that can impact the therapist's ability to resolve conflict . A conflict resolution model will be shared with each element of the model explored and discussed using a questioning format. The session will conclude with participants using learned content to discuss and come to resolution with several case studies that are common challenges that school based PTs face.
