Valid and reliable measurement of symptoms is essential for psychopathology research as well as for evidence-based treatment. To enhance accuracy and efficiency, self-report measures are frequently subject to revisions and updates. For example, the 42-item Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (OCI; Foa et al., 1998) was later revised to the 18-item OCI-R (Foa et al., 2002), retaining the hoarding subscale. However recent developments in our understanding of OCD and related disorders (OCRDs) established that hoarding is not part of OCD, requiring an additional revision of the OCI-R to remove hoarding items.
The need to revise measures and diagnostic classification categories arises due to reasons including accumulation of newly established scientific information about psychopathological mechanisms, formation of new diagnostic categories, cultural shifts, and market constraints leading to a growing demand for very brief measures. In this symposium, we present cutting-edge psychometric work anchored in each of the aforementioned considerations.
Dr. Jon Abramowitz will present two newly published revisions of the OCI-R. First, the OCI-12 is a 12-item revision of the OCI-R in which hoarding and neutralizing items were omitted. Dr. Abramowitz will then present the development of the newly published OCI-4 – a 4-item ultra-brief version of the OCI-R intended to be used as an OCD screener in non-specialized medical centers. Psychometric and theoretical considerations for both measures will be reviewed, and new norms, clinical cuffs, and severity benchmarks will be presented.
Dr. Dean McKay will present two revisions of the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory – Child Version (OCI-CV). First, the recently published 18-item OCI-CV-R will be presented - in which hoarding items were omitted. Next, Dr. McKay will present the OCI-CV-5 – a new 5-item ultra-brief version of the OCI-CV intended to be used as an OCD screener. Psychometric data including factor analyses, norms, and clinical cutoffs will be presented, and theoretical considerations discussed.
Dr. Peggy Andover will present the results of a study examining the relationship between non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) which is classified as a disorder requiring further research, and excoriation (skin-picking) disorder, which is classified as an OCRD. To inform diagnostic classification for the DSM-6, the study aimed at critically examining NSSI disorder among individuals engaged in skin picking only and those engaged in other NSSI behaviors.
Finally, Dr. Joseph McGuire will discuss a disturbing new phenomenon that surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, namely the presentation of acute-onset of tic-like symptoms in adolescents (also known as ‘Tic-Toc-Tics’). Currently, there is no formal assessment enabling differentiation between tics and tic-like behaviors. In this presentation Dr. McGuire will discuss the clinical presentation of tic-like behaviors, review evidence-based assessment of tics, and will propose criteria for ‘functional tic-like-behaviors’, to facilitate evidence-based differential diagnosis.
This symposium will benefit from Dr. David Tolin, a leading expert on OCD and related disorders, who will discuss and integrate these presentations.
