Child maltreatment and trauma are associated with a broad range of psychopathology, including post-traumatic stress and behavior problems. Evidence-based treatments (EBTs) for these concerns include Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT), and Teacher-Child Interaction Therapy (TCIT). However, implementation of EBTs in community settings is an ongoing challenge. In this symposium, senior treatment developers and experts in implementation science will discuss current efforts to build community capacity to provide services for children and families affected by child maltreatment.
Presentation 1 will describe how training in AF-CBT was adapted to a virtual format in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and how virtual training opportunities may impact reach of EBTs. The speaker will present data on trainee characteristics, engagement in training, and training outcomes, with a focus on comparisons between in-person and virtual training. Presentation 2 focuses on improving client engagement and fidelity to EBTs in community settings. It will describe an interactive technology-based tool to improve delivery of TF-CBT and the results of a mixed-methods evaluation. The speaker will discuss how integrating technology into treatment can promote treatment effectiveness for children and families. Presentation 3 considers how effective behavioral health treatments can be integrated into non-specialty settings serving at-risk children. It will describe how TCIT was adapted for use in Head Start mental health consultation and present data on its use. Our discussant, a leading expert in the dissemination, implementation, and sustainment of evidence-based trauma-focused interventions, will share perspectives on how to support community-based providers in providing effective services for victims of child maltreatment and other trauma. All presentations will incorporate consideration of ways to promote equitable access and delivery of community-based services to reduce behavioral health disparities.
