There is a growing interest in scalable mental health interventions, such as internet-based self-help treatments, to meet the increasing demand for mental health services. Given the consistent growth in diversity worldwide and in the U.S. specifically, it is essential that clinical trials for mental health interventions include diverse samples. This issue is particularly relevant for racial and ethnic minorities who are at a higher risk of suffering from more prolonged, chronic, and severely debilitating depression when compared to White individuals. However, the field currently lacks data on how racial and ethnic diversity are represented in the internet-based self-help literature. For these reasons, we conducted a systematic review to examine the overall reporting of racial and ethnic minorities in published clinical trials of internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (iCBT) for depression. We also reviewed the representation of specific racial and ethnic minority groups in clinical trials of iCBT. We used data identified by Cuijpers et al. (2019), which identified CBT clinical trials published from 1966 to 2021. From this data, we included studies that used an iCBT intervention in adults (n = 62) and excluded those that were not internet-based (n = 23). Preliminary findings revealed that of the 39 papers identified, only 31% reported race, and 1.5% reported ethnicity. Of those that reported race, 84% were conducted in the United States, 8% in Australia, and 8% in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, the most reported race was White (83%%), followed by Black (4%), and Asian (2%). These findings suggest that the current iCBT literature does not represent racial-ethnic diversity worldwide.
