Baltimore, Maryland
Ms. Currens is a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner. She is currently the Director for the Center for Addiction Medicine, an Opioid Treatment Program on the campus of the University of Maryland Midtown Campus, where she has worked for 30 years. She is a past president of the Maryland Association for the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder, during which time she led the organization through the Maryland Medicaid “unbundling” and advocated for payment for medical services and succeeded in getting higher reimbursement for weekly medication bundles for buprenorphine and methadone. She has been an advocate for the patient population and was one of the first in the state to hire peer recovery specialists and become a certified peer supervisor herself. She has also been integral in bringing new nurses into the addiction medicine field. She is the President for the National Association of Chemical Dependency Nurses, and serves on the University of Maryland School of Nursing Advisory Board of Addiction Education. Marian Currens has been described by colleagues as a dedicated and caring nurse practitioner who has devoted her entire career to caring for people with opioid use disorder in Baltimore City and in other parts of Maryland. She believes in the value of medications for opioid use disorder. She is the person who comes in on a Saturday to bring donuts and coffee to show her appreciation for staff. She lives what she does and loves what she does.
