Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants will:

Identify opportunities for expanding local community based peer-run programs into diverse behavioral health settings including: Wellness and Recovery Centers, Opioid Treatment Programs, Crisis Walk-in Centers, and Peer Outreach programs.
Identify key partnerships needed to implement peer programs within criminal justice settings include state prison systems.
Articulate the history of the peer movement and associated workforce development within Maryland's Public Behavioral Health System.

Presentation Summary: This presentation will offer diverse perspectives and insights around innovative peer training and recovery support programs across behavioral health, workforce development, and criminal justice settings. Speakers include State Leadership from Maryland's Department of Health, LABOR, Dept of Public Safety; Maryland's Peer Credentialing Board; Peer Workforce Trainers; Wellness and Recovery Network Administrators and most important our Peer Recovery Specialist.

Participants are encouraged to come learn about Maryland's unique system of peer services including our extensive network of Wellness and Recovery Centers. Attendees will also learn about the history of peer credentialing and how those efforts have increased the competencies of peers working in Maryland. Additionally, we will share strategies specific to developing workforce programs and supports for individuals who have been impacted by the opioid crisis that we've experienced nationally for a number of years.

We will focus on how peer training and support programs have been developed for incarcerated citizens with Maryland's Correctional Institutions. These programs provide individuals with the required training and experience to obtain their CPRS credential while serving their sentence. Those incarcerated Peers who are released leave with an industry recognized credential, while those serving long-term or life sentences offers services to other incarcerated citizens.
