At the completion of this activity, participants will:
Describe the historical impact on current educational and licensure requirements for both SUD supervisors and therapists. This review will delineate the distinctiveness of the SUD field in regards to inadequate training, thus, impacting professionalization and patient outcomes.
List the four themes impacting quality supervision and skill development of both the SUD clinical supervisor and therapist: clinical supervision and therapist SUD training, duality of clinical supervision, therapeutic alliance and turnover in the SUD treatment field.
Acknowledge that adequate training of evidence-based practice supervision models can mitigate existing systemic limitations.
Presentation Summary: Effective clinical supervision in the substance use disorder (SUD) treatment field has considerable influence in cultivating therapist professional growth and development. The essence of clinical supervision in the SUD field includes two imperative, yet competing, priorities: clinical and administrative supervision. This presentation elucidates themes contributory to inadequate supervision in the SUD field and the ultimate impact on occupational commitment and turnover. To that end, the argument for separating the duality of the clinical supervisor role which denotes the potential advancement in clinical supervision practices is explored. Lastly, suggestions for systemic change and the need for future research will be discussed.
