Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, participants will:
Describe fentanyl testing procedures and regulations throughout the US
Describe how the lack of timely and accurate testing impacts unique treatment protocols that may be necessary to effectively treat patients using fentanyl
Evaluate patient outcomes and how fentanyl use may increase the likelihood of negative outcomes
Presentation Summary: In recent years, synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl, have been the major contributor of opioid-related overdose deaths in the United States. Inconsistences in fentanyl testing regulations in the US often place significant burden on MAT providers to identify fentanyl use in patients. The current presentation will discuss the current challenges related to fentanyl testing and explore differences in treatment outcomes among patients with unfavorable and favorable fentanyl tests, and evaluate how fentanyl-testing requirements affect timely treatment of this highly vulnerable population.
