Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants will:

Identify steps taken to sustain and improve medication use for opioid use disorder into Rhode Island’s Department of Corrections
Describe effective drug screening and medication assisted treatment protocols that can be instituted within a Department of Corrections
Discuss long term outcomes related to sustainment of the MOUD program within a Department of Corrections.

Presentation Summary: Research indicates that the risk of overdose is increased following release from prison and jail. In 2014 and 2015, 21% of all fatal overdose victims in RI were incarcerated in the two years prior to death, an increase from 9% in 2009. Medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) is the most effective evidenced-based approach to treat opioid use disorder. Although MAT has been proven effective, few correctional facilities in the US offer treatment with methadone, buprenorphine, or naltrexone. This workshop provides positive outcomes of 5 years ~ the question is not "why or how" it is now "how soon" to treat.
