PC1117: An Experience of Peritoneal Dialysis in Neonates from Developing Country

Background: The acute kidney injury is frequently encountered in critically ill neonates. Peritoneal dialysis still remains commonest mode of renal replacement in neonates. There is a paucity of data in the literature on the experience of peritoneal dialysis in neonates. The aim of this study was to evaluate the indications, complications, and outcomes of PD in a tertiary care NICU.

Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of peritoneal dialysis in neonates in terms of demographic and procedure related details from electronic records and case files.

Results: It included 23 patients during 24 months period. 45% of babies were inborn. Mean Birth weight and gestational age was 2200±430 grams and 345/7±21/7 weeks respectively. The most common cause of dialysis was AKI. The other indications included hyperammonemia and dyselectrolytemia. The complications observed were bleeding, blockage and peritonitis. The median duration of PD was 7 days. Outcome of death occurred in 70% of cases.

Conclusion: Peritoneal dialysis is an effective route of renal replacement therapy in the neonatal period for management of metabolic disturbances as well as renal failure. Complications are common. Mortality is high and depends on underlying etiology.
