PC1138: Multi-cultural, Multi-lingual "Parent Voice" NICU Discharge Education Videos

Purpose/Objectives:

Background: Parent education regarding high-risk infant discharge in US NICUs typically involves nursing-led in-person instruction either one-to-one or through group classes. Access to timely discharge education can be limited by the in-person nature of this training. Futher, as parents are empowered by testimonials of other parents, it is possible that parent-led education, in addition to nursing-led education may have significant impact on parent behaviors. Parent-driven NICU discharge education that is easily accessible remotely is lacking in US NICUs.

Objective: Create 10 parent-delivered NICU discharge education videos featuring a racially/ethnically diverse array of parents that are freely viewable on a phone or tablet at anytime.

Design/Methods: Methods: We convened a multi-displinary and racially/ethnically diverse team of parents, neontologists, and a pediatrician with expertise in post-NICU follow-up care in 3/21. We ascertained an extensive list of topics covering AAP-endorsed discharge education for high-risk newborns. To reach consensus on our final "high-yield" topics and content, we surveyed newborn providers participating in the Massachusetts NICU Family Engagement quality improvement collaborative and NICU families through facebook groups, an interviewed Spanish speaking families in 2 NICUs in 4/21-6/21 regarding perceptions of the highest priority topics. Next, we identified and worked closely with a professional film company, recruited and trained an array of families from 2 Boston-based NICUs regarding our proposed content from 8/21-1/22. We filmed families reading scripted content and testimonials, and "b-roll" in the NICU and at a family home over 3 days in 3/22. Finally, we worked collaboratively with our team, the AAP SoNPM leadership and the AAP communications department to edit our videos (4/22-).

Results:

Results: We are making 10 videos, approximately 3-5 minutes each; 5 are in English and 5 are in Spanish with native speakers on the following topics: 1) Infant discharge readiness; 2) Infant feeding; 3) Parent discharge readiness/preparing the home; 3) Parental mental health and social support; and 5) Infant post-discharge care. At the time of this submission, we are editing videos as described and anticipate completion and dissemination to AAP SoNPM community at large in summer 2022. We will create a QR code which can be easily used by providers to introduce families to the videos. These videos are meant to augment, not take the place of, existing nursing-driven discharge education. Videos will be made available at the NCE.

Conclusion: Ten "Parents as teachers" high-yield, AAP-endorsed, discharge education videos in English and Spanish are anticipated for broad dissemination to the neonatal community in Summer 2022. This work was funded by an AAP SoNPM grant.
